 Today we: -Listened to the story "The Wish Tree" and created wish ornaments for our wish trees at Northern Lights. We will be putting up the trees and placing our ornaments tomorrow during Makerspace. -Learned about four ways to start writing the beginning of a story, including an action, a thought or question, a sound, and dialogue. We wrote a story beginning as a class and practiced writing a story beginning about a camping trip independently. Then we started planning how we will start our pourquoi story beginning with our wetland animal. Reminders: -PJ Day tomorrow. Please do not bring stuffies to school.

 Today we: -Did a basic math fact check-in, these sheets will be send home on Wednesday. With the cuisenaire rods we did a math challenge to create equations equal to one whole. We filled in the shapes of numbers with cuisenaire rods and then showed our work to calculate the decimal value of each number shape. -Did a reading response where we wrote about the book we are currently reading by answering question stems. Ask me about my book!

 Today we: -Created zentangle art of our wetland animal who is the main character of the story we have started planning. Check out my art when you are at the school for conferences! -Continued to work on sentence structure within our writing. We reviewed the use of conjunctions from yesterday, practiced fixing some run-on sentences as a class, and then applied our learning to our own writing. -Are so excited to share our learning with our families at Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday and Friday! Please be on time for your 15 minute conference and check out the Book Fair before or after your conference.

 Today we: -played curling in PE. We worked in teams of three and each player had a turn to throw a rock, alternating with the opposing team. The closest rock to the middle won the round. -continued learning about the Artic region and the Inuit people. We answered reading comprehension questions based on text about the region. We also watched a video that showed footage from across Canada so we could compare the geographical regions of Canada. Reminder: See you on Thursday evening or Friday during the day!   Hello families, Parent / Teacher Conferences will be in person at Northern Lights School this Thursday night (November 24) between 4:30 - 8:00 pm and Friday (November 25) during the day between 9:00 am - 2:00 pm.  Today we: -Continued to work on breaking apart run-on sentences. We practiced splitting them into two smaller sentences and using conjunction words to create longer compound sentences. We edited a piece of our writing looking for run-on sentences to share with our family during conferences this week. -Explored the Book Fair in the Learning Commons. We circled books we were interested in our book fair sheet to share with you at home. We are so excited to explore the Book Fair with our families during conferences!

 Today we: -Conducted an experiment using the scientific method. We observed what happened visually and to the taste of water and lemon juice mixture without sugar, when sugar was added, and then when the sugar was stirred in. Ask me about what I observed and tasted during the experiment! We then brainstormed different ways that we could try recovering the sugar from the liquid. We left a cup of lemonade out over the weekend to see if evaporation would result in sugar being left in the cup on Monday. Reminders: -Parent Teacher Student Conferences are next week on Thursday evening and Friday. Please make sure you sign up for a 15 time slot so we can discuss your child's learning together.  Today we: -Explored using cuisenaire rods to represent decimal numbers to tenths. We will be continuing this work next week, comparing and ordering decimal numbers using the rods.

 Today we: -Built enrichment toys for a zoo using the makerspace materials. Check out the photos to see some of the neat ideas we created! -Separated solids in our first chemistry experiment using sieves, air, magnets, and water. Ask me about which separation techniques worked well for separating which type of solids! Photos of this science lab will be posted outside our classroom for families to see during parent conferences next week.

 Today we: -Learned about the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. We brainstormed examples and shared as a class. We wrote about what we thought chemistry was about and how it is used in everyday life.  -We reviewed the math assessments from last week. We did a some practice word problems and got a second chance to show what we know about solving a word problem using an equation with a variable. Reminders: -Photo retake day is Nov 23rd. -Student pictures went home yesterday and can be ordered online.

 Today we: -Demonstrated our ability to express a word problem as an equation with a letter variable. We showed how we solved the problem using pictures, symbols, and words. We created our own word problem that connected to the equation 25=n+7. -Chose our wetland animal that we will be including in our Pourquoi Stories. We started planning how the animal's adaptation and character flaw will be incorporated into the story. -A picture of our Remembrance Day wreath that the class made yesterday is included below, with a special guest! Reminders: -School Remembrance Day Ceremony for students is tomorrow (Thursday). No school on Friday for Remembrance Day. -Picture Retake Day has been moved to November 23. -In-person Parent Teacher Student Conferences are next week November 24 and 25. Bookings will open on the evening of November 10th. It is important that I have the chance to connect with every family during conferences to discuss student learning.

 Today we: -Read the book "Peace" which discussed how peace in our world starts with peaceful actions and words by each individual and in our homes and schools. We created poppies and wrote on our poppies examples and explanations of what peace is to each of us. -Completed a math assessment on numerical and algebraic equations. We will be completing the second portion of this assessment on Wednesday, which will ask us to apply what we know to a multi-step real world scenario question. -Reviewed our science wetlands assessment from Friday. Ask me how I did! Reminders: -We will be recognizing Remembrance Day at NLS on Thursday. Students in programs including Scouts, Cubs, Brownies and Girl Guides are welcome to wear their uniform on Thursday. -Photo Retake Day is Monday November 14.

 Today we: -Continued working on our floor hockey skills through a game called Pin Remover.  We tried to knock over the bowling bins in the middle of the gym by hitting them with our floor hockey ball and earned points every time we were successful. -Completed a wetland assessment to show what we know and finish off our wetlands unit in science. We will be reviewing the assessment together on Monday. -Shared our strategies for solving equations with an unknown variable, including relating division to multiplication. We shared our strategies with others and represented our understandings to solve problems.

 Today we: -Reviewed the life cycle of a frog using the book "And The Bullfrog Sings". We used playing cards with information about different producers and consumers found in a wetland to create food chains.  -Did a check-in for our math facts. Students are bringing home their work from today so they can share with you. To continue practicing their basic math facts at home students can fill out the questions they skipped and play the basic fact games posted in our Google Classroom.

 Today we: -Started floor hockey in PE. We practiced holding the stick and learned how to handle the ball.  -Acted out conflict, rude, mean and bullying situations. We performed the situations in front of the class and other students categorized the situation.  -Read a story "How to Catch a Snowman" in makerspace and built snowman traps using loose parts and building materials. -Continued working on Math Mashup problems finding the value of various images within equations. Reminders: -Students go outside at recess unless it is -20 degrees or colder. Please make sure your child is coming dressed for the weather.
