 Today we: -Created social media ads for a haunted hotel. We advertised the many activities at the hotel including a monster convention, spooky food at the restaurant, a halloween party, and a vampire comedy show. -Demonstrated our understanding of equivalent equations through our spider math. We brought our spiders home to show you our math work today! Reminders: NLS Spirit Wear (t-shirts and hoodies) can be ordered until 7:00 pm this Wednesday, November 2.  A form with the details came home to every family today for more details.   (This will be the only time you will be able to order this year.)

 Today we: -Reviewed numeric and algebraic expressions from the past few weeks in preparation for a math assessment next week. -Had creative writing time based on photo writing prompts. We got to choose to write in any format (article, letter, story, comic, and more) and about either of the two photos shown to the class. We practiced breaking our run-on sentences apart within our writing piece. -Had Drop Everything and Read Day. You can see in the photos that students had a book with them throughout the day. In the photo we were practicing clapping our music rhythms aloud that we had created earlier this week. Reminders: -No school on Friday. -Monday is Halloween and a learning day at school. Please do not sent Halloween candy to school and costumes must follow the guidelines outlined in Mrs. Brinson's weekly email.

 Today we: -Had a whole school read in. We enjoyed reading with our friends from around the school and sitting wherever we wanted to read our book. -Evaluated expressions that included variables, such as if x=6, what does 3x+4 equal? Ask me to explain how I can solve this equation. -Reviewed physical and behavioural adaptations using Shadow as an example. We did a check-in to show what we know about adaptations of plants and animals in a wetland.

Today we: -Read Carson Crosses Canada, which is a story about a lady and her dog who cross Canada on a road trip. We were able to see pictures of each province and use the clues in the pictures and writing to guess where the characters were in Canada. Through this read aloud we reviewed the placement of the provinces and some of the main geographical features in each province.  -Created book characters to decorate our door with for Literacy Week.   -Played Pumpkin Smash in PE and practiced our throwing and aiming in the game.

 Today we: -Acted out social situations and identified whether it is an example of conflict, rude, mean, or bullying. We also discussed the difference between when it is ok to think things and when it is ok to say things.  -Finished presenting on the remaining provinces and territories. As we were listening to the students presenting other students were summarizing what the land looks like, the climate, and an interesting fact about the province or territory. Today we: -Walked to the pond and did an offering to the land that we were learning from. We did six quick sketches at our sit spots. Ask me about what I saw and what I drew! -Finished up our social studies presentations on the provinces and territories, which we will be presenting tomorrow to the class.   Reminders: Next week is Literacy Week!  There are a few spirit days next week to help us celebrate and get in the literacy spirit. Read my Shirt Day – October 24th Your student can wear a shirt that has words on it for others to read! Teacher Swap Book Reading – October 25th Teachers will travel to a different classroom to read a story to a different class. Whole School Read Out – October 26 th Everyone in the whole school will go out to the field, pick a spot and read outside. Stop Drop and Read Day – October 27 th Several times during this day the students will hear an announcement to stop, drop and read.

 Today we: -Continued our social studies research project on the provinces and territories on the Chromebooks. Ask me about which province or territory I am researching and some interesting facts I have learned about it! -Started reading our next class novel "Thirst" which takes place in Mumbai, India. We analyzed photos of Mumbai as a group and collected our observations and inferences onto chart paper. We discussed as a class how the photos show income disparities between different neighborhoods in Mumbai. We used Google Maps to look at Calgary and were able to see income disparities between neighbourhoods in our city, although the differences were less than what was seen in the Mumbai photos. Reminders: -Wednesday is picture day and we will also be going on a walking field trip to the Country Hills Storm Pond. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.

 Today we: -Used the information from our graphic organizers last week to start creating a slide presentation about our chosen province or territory. We will be presenting on Thursday and Friday to the whole class so they can learn from our research. -Learned how to do a basketball layup in PE. We are practicing and learning new moves to use when we start playing basketball games later this week. -Looked at our basic math fact progress from September to October with Mrs. Swaroop individually. Activities to help students practice basic math facts at home will be posted to Google Classroom later this week. -Reviewed the difference between conflict, rude, mean, and bullying. We discussed how choosing to be kind has positive impacts on the other person and on us! Please review the chart with your child so that you have common language to use with them when discussing interactions they are having at school.  Today we: -Had a virtual smudge with Mr. Scout to start our Field Study Fridays off in the right way. Mr. Scout also shared the story of "Napi and the Rock" with us. -Had a discussion with Mrs. Docherty about saying using nice words with others, keeping our feet to ourselves, and keeping our hands to ourselves. We discussed how we can ask an adult for help, ask the other student to stop, or walk away if we are in a situation that requires action. -Read the book "The World Needs More Purple Schools"  and discussed actions we can take to make our school into a purple school. We wrote down individual actions we will work on through the rest of October to help our school feel a little more purple. Ask me about what I wrote!

 Today we: -Read the picture book "Jabari Jumps" and created a plot diagram for the book together on the whiteboard. Then we created a plot diagram for the story "How the Rabbit Got Its Long Ears" independently. This is building on the work we did yesterday about plot diagrams. -Started researching a province or territory of Canada. We are analyzing the information from a text about our chosen province or territory and organizing the information into a graphic organizer.

 Today we: -Reviewed the parts of a plot diagram; exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. We looked at a plot diagram of The Three Little Pigs as an example. We created a plot diagram for our class novel study The Journal. Ask me what the conflict and climax was in our novel! -Created Flipgrid videos explaining our plot diagram. We also included a book review in our video where we answered five questions of our choosing about the novel. Ask me what I thought about the novel!

 Today we: -Had our wetland field trip to the Country Hills Storm Pond. We participated in a variety of activities including I Spy, beaver adaptation dress up, and looking for and indentifying invertebrates in the pond. Ask me about my favourite activity today! (see photos)
