Thursday December 22, 2022

  Today we worked on our word work groups for the last time in 2022 We played mission impossible in the gym In math we finished our grocery shopping decimal addition assignments. In writing we finished our flip grids and typing out our wetland story. We worked in our reading cafe groups, the lesson group focused on finding or, ar and aw words in the text. We did chemistry with hot chocolate and learned about solvents and solutes then we watched a movie and enjoyed our science experiment!

  Today we worked our groups in word work  In math we used grocery flyers to make a budget for breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks. Through this we practiced adding decimals to figure out how much money we needed to purchase all the food.  In writing we continued to type up our good copies of our wetland stories In reading cafe, we explored more igh words adding and changing sounds to make new words  At the end of the day, we worked hard to log onto Minecraft and create a class community

Tuesday December 20, 2022

  In language arts we recorded our flipgrids about the novel Thirst. We answered 5 questions about the book. Including giving it a rating of up to five stars and why? What is a character you would like to meet? What grade ages would you recommend for this book? and many more!  In social studies we continued learning about the Cordillera region. Then we had a think pair share about how we feel about forestry in the Cordillera region. Then we filled out a google form about the region.  We also continued working on typing our Wetland story. We are working hard to finish them by Thursday.  In gym we played mission impossible! 

Monday December 19, 2022

In math we learned about adding and subtracting decimals and played decimal war with cards to practice our place value.  We finished our novel Thirst and will be doing a flipgrid review tomorrow.  In writing we started typing out our good copies of our Wetland stories.  In social studies we learned about the Cordillera region of Canada, tomorrow we will fill out a google form about the region. We learned that the Cordillera's main industry is forestry.  Reminder to bring in your hot chocolate form if you haven’t already!

  In writing we finished our ending of our wetland story. Next class we will type our good copies.  In math we had a decimal and large number check in that included place value, different forms of the number, number lines and rounding to the nearest million, hundred thousand, ten thousand, thousand, hundred, ten, one, tenths, hundredths, thousandths.  Today a permission form is going home to be signed to participate in a hot chocolate science experiment. If you DO NOT wish for your child to drink the hot chocolate please fill out the slip below and return it as soon as possible.

  Today we: Learned about rounding large numbers and decimals. If the number in the place value beside it is 4 or lower it rounds down if the number is 5 or higher the number rounds up. In writing we continued to work on our endings for our wetland stories. We are including a memory, a feeling, a decision or a hope/wish.  In social we learned about the Interior Plains region focusing on the industries that they have including farming and oil and gas.

In gym we played an Elf game. We wrote about the ending of a story. In math we worked on rounding large numbers to 10 000 000. In social studies we are learning how to take notes and focused on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Lowland region.

  Today we played Santas workshop in physical education. We learned about the Canadian Shield region of Canada and did an assignment on it. In math we reviewed decimals and played a math game.  We worked on making an ending good! 

Monday December 12, 2022

Today we started off with word work. In PE we played a game called Santas Workshop and we had to ride on scooters to the middle of the gym and get presents for people and then on the third round you had to pick up each others feet and bring them to the middle. We finished our main events in writing. In math we practiced large numbers in word form and ordering. We each got a large number and had to present them to the class on the smart board. In social we learned about the Atlantic region!

 Today we: -Completed a self-assessment in health which guided us to self-reflect and provide examples of our health skills in action including in the areas of safety, relationships and problem-solving with others, and goal setting. -We continued writing the main events of our Pourquoi stories and finished up the art critique we started yesterday. Ask me to explain to you what the art piece "Resource Use" by Leah Dorion is about! (see photo below) Reminders:

 Today we: -Represented decimal numbers including tenths, hundredths, and thousandths using base ten blocks, drawings of base ten blocks, and word form.  -Started planning the main event of our pourquoi stories including action, dialogue, thoughts and sounds. We will be continuing to write the main event portion of our stories tomorrow. -Learned about the relationship of Indigenous Peoples with the land through analysis of the art piece "Resource Use" and the story "When We Had Sled Dogs" in social studies. -Continued creating our cards for seniors from yesterday (see photos).

 Today we: -Made cards for seniors at the Newport Harbour facility in our community. We read the books "Edgar's Christmas" and "Share Some Kindness, Bring Some Light" as a class. We discussed the characters in the books and how their actions of kindness made others around them feel. These books inspired the cards we created which will be given to seniors in our community. -Continued learning about the Arctic region in Canada including the climate, landforms, industries, and natural resources found in the region. We watched videos that compared two methods of transportation used in the Artic; dog teams and snowmobiles. We then independently explained which form of transportation we thought was most effective in writing.

 Today we: -Got feedback from a peer about the beginning of our Pourquoi stories. We made changes to our writing based on the peer feedback we received. -Planned a music festival working in groups. We presented the details of our music festival to the class, including a poster that we designed to promote our concert (see photos).

 Today we: -Did a brief overview looking at a map of Canada and comparing regions. We continued focusing on the Arctic region and how the climate effects how people in this region live. -Started writing the beginning of our Pourquoi story. We used one of the 4 techniques to hook our readers at the beginning of the story. We introduced the setting and main characters in our story. We continued to focus on sentence structure within the beginning of our story.

 Today we: -Finished our Poperties of Water experiments and reflected on the guiding questions for each experiment. Students represented their observations using drawings and writing. -Continued placing decimal numbers on a number line and discussed the importance of spacing. Equal spacing on a number line represents equal value between each of the numbers on the number line. -We did a game in music called Guess the Instrument. Students heard the instrument and worked with their table group to guess what instrument they were hearing.

Today we: -Practiced putting decimal numbers between zero and two on the number line. As a class we discussed the placement of each number using Let's Talk stems to share our thoughts. We practiced writing decimal numbers in word form. -We did a variety of experiments to observe the properties of water, including examining water droplets, water bulging, and floating a paperclip. Ask me what I learned about water in each experiment!
