 Today we:

-Took part in Truth and Reconciliation Week. We watched a session on Indigenous Languages to help us develop a better understanding of how Indigenous Peoples are learning and sharing their languages. We read the book "When We Were Alone" and discussed the elements of Nokom's culture that she was not allowed to have in residential school. We then shared in circle important parts of our culture and how we would feel if we were not allowed to celebrate. 





Reminders:

On Thursday, September 29, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt (or an orange article of clothing if they don't have an orange shirt) to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. September 30 is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. The intention of this day is to recognize and honor residential school survivors, their families and communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. This is a non-operation day for the CBE. Our students will be engaging in learning prior to September 30 to honor this important day and to show our school community’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Hello NLS Families! Today we: tested the "rain gauge" weather instrument - we wanted to see how much rain fell at our school today, so we measured it all day long! It rained approximately 1.8cm during school hours - we left it out overnight, so will see if there is more rain in the morning! - see photos below did another survey and practiced making bar graphs and dot plots - ask me what question I surveyed people about! learned all about climate vs. weather  did a brain break drawing activity - see photo below learned more about Canada after confederation  finished The City of Ember - ask me about it!! Reminders: wear your favourite outfit tomorrow! bring in a white t-shirt for tie-dying!  please respond to the survey link that was sent out to families today via school messenger about the grade 5 send off!
